Seahawk Volleyball Falls Short to Eastern Mennonite

St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior outside hitter Brigid Morris (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) tallied a career-best 19 kills but the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Eastern Mennonite University in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

St. Mary's 1, Eastern Mennonite 3 (16-25, 25-21, 20-25, 24-26)

How It Happened

  • Eastern Mennonite broke a 3-3 draw in the first set with a 5-0 push and built a nine-point advantage three times in rolling to a 25-16 win for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Seahawks evened up the match with a 25-21 victory in the second using a 6-2 run to undo a 9-9 tie. Morris and junior outside hitter Grace Seifert (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury Christian) each notched four kills to pace St. Mary's in the win.
  • The Royals only trailed twice in the third set before establishing a 17-10 lead and grabbing a 2-1 margin in the match.
  • St. Mary's jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth before EMU closed the gap and the set went on to witness 10 tied scores.
  • The Seahawks maintained the lead throughout the fourth with Morris giving the hosts a 24-23 advantage with her 19th kill of the match. However, three straight EMU points on two kills by Janna Williams and a service ace by Carly Gingerich sealed the win for the Royals.

  • The Royals registered 10 service aces and 9.0 team blocks.
