Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team wrapped up the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over Wesley College. The Seahawks (16-9, 5-4 CAC) posted set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-11 in the victory.
St. Mary's has never lost to Wesley (11-15, 1-8 CAC) in nine meetings and has never even dropped a set to the Wolverines.
The Seahawks enter the 2014 CAC Volleyball Championship Tournament next week as the fifth seed. St. Mary's will face No. 4 seed University of Mary Washington on Tuesday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. in a first-round match. The Seahawks will look to avenge a 3-1 regular-season loss to Mary Washington on October 18th.
"Our team played well today. Every set, we played more and more efficient. Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) really solidified our serve receive and defense. Her play today really allowed our setters to move the ball around," stated first-year head coach Jeremy Sands.
Senior Jenahye' Johnson (Randallstown, Md./Seton Keough) and junior middle hitter Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) paced the Seahawks in the win with nine kills each while Johnson hit at a .529 clip.
Junior middle hitter Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and first-year Brigid Morris (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) contributed to the offense with seven kills apiece as Vaillant tallied a match-best .545 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and junior setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) combined for 37 assists in keeping the attack rolling like a well-oiled machine. Chao also served up two aces.
At the net, Goodspeed picked up a season-best four solo blocks while Graf and Vaillant each had two block assists.
Hill led the defense with a match-best 23 digs.
First-year outside hitter Tionne Graves-Brown (Sacramento, Calif./Rosemont) was Wesley's leader with seven kills while sophomore setter Beth Schlecker (Bear, Del./Delaware Military Academy) dished 10 assists. Junior Meghan Marshall (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) registered eight digs.
