St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team rolled to their second Capital Athletic Conference sweep in a row in posting a 3-0 win over York College of Pennsylvania Tuesday night. The victory also marks the Seahawks' third straight CAC win as St. Mary's improves to 12-6 (3-1 CAC) on the season.
The Seahawks needed to rally in the first two sets to come away with 25-19, 27-25 wins before opening up the third set with a 15-6 lead en route to a 25-15 win.
"I really liked the way our team focused on the little things tonight. We stepped up in many aspects of the game, especially in defense and blocking. We made the right adjustments at the right time which shows how well we are learning the game," stated first-year head coach Jeremy Sands.
Junior middle hitter Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) notched her second consecutive nine-kill match while adding a season-best five block assists for the second time this year. First-year Brigid Morris (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) wasn't far behind with seven kills, two service aces, and two block assists.
In the first set, the Seahawks turned around a 15-12 deficit by closing out the set on a 13-4 run. Goodspeed tallied four of her five first set kills in that run while Morris contributed four kills and sophomore libero Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) provided seven digs.
The second set featured 14 tied scores and six lead changes, a back-and-forth affair with York holding its last lead at 19-18 before a kill by junior middle hitter Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), an ace by junior setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and a Spartan error gave St. Mary's a 21-19 lead. The Spartans tied it up four more times before St. Mary's was able to string two consecutive points in order to win by two.
St. Mary's cruised to a strong start for the third set, opening up with a nine-point lead. It was a well-rounded offensive effort as three Seahawks each had two kills.
Sophomore Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) finished the night with her team-leading sixth double-double on 11 assists and 11 digs while contributing six kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Chao ended the night with 15 assists and three service aces while Hill tallied 15 digs on the night.
York (9-16, 2-2 CAC) was led by senior outside hitter Jackie Schwarm (Lanham, Md.) who picked up nine kills while senior setter Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) had a near double-double with 23 assists and nine digs.
St. Mary's remains home for its matches on Saturday, October 18th as the Seahawks host a tri-match with CAC foe, University of Mary Washington (16-8, 2-1 CAC), and McDaniel College (18-5) as part of their Dig Pink Rally in the Michael P.
