Fredericksburg, Va. – The 2011 season for the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team came to a close Tuesday night as the fifth-seeded Seahawks suffered a 3-1 setback to fourth-seeded University of Mary Washington in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament. The set scores were 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25.
St. Mary's ends the 2011 campaign with a 10-18 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in conference action. The Seahawks won five of their last eight games, including a four-match win streak.
In the Seahawks' 25-21 third set victory, the St. Mary's attack connected on 13 kills with six errors in 34 attempts for its highest set hitting percentage of the match (.206).
Junior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) paced the Seahawk attack in the loss with a match-best 11 kills while senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) contributed 10.
Sophomore libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) led the way defensively for St. Mary's with 17 and 13 digs, respectively. Hlavinka contributed to the defense with three total blocks, including one solo stop.
The attackers were set up by junior Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) and sophomores Rachel Wilson (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch). Thorne tallied a team-best 11 assists while Wilson contributed nine and Straub added eight.
