York, Pa. – Junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) earned her first career Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week award for the week ending October 2 as announced Monday afternoon by league commissioner, Tom Byrnes. Blanc is the first Seahawk to pick up the weekly honor since October 26, 2009 when Katie Obal '11 was the last to receive it.
In recording 51 digs, 21 kills, seven service aces, and four block assists in three matches, Blanc helped St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 2-1 weekend as the Seahawks (5-13) posted their first back-to-back wins of the season.
Blanc had a team-best 18 digs, match-best eight kills and two block assists in leading St. Mary's to its first conference win of the season – a midweek sweep of York College of Pennsylvania on the road.
She followed that up with match-bests of 21 digs and eight kills in another sweep of a league opponent, this time Hood College to open up Saturday's tri-match. Blanc added as well a season-best four service aces. She finished out the week with 12 digs, five kills and two aces in a 3-0 loss to Gettysburg College on Saturday.
This is Blanc's first season playing at outside hitter after coming to St. Mary's as a defensive specialist/libero. She currently leads the team with 21 service aces and with 3.65 digs per set. Blanc is also third on the team in kills per set with a 2.03 average,
The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, October 4 as St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet University (13-6) in non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
