St. Mary's Volleyball Splits at Days Inn Blue Jay Classic

Elizabethtown, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team split their final two matches at the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic on Saturday, taking a five-set decision from host Elizabethtown College before falling 3-0 to Haverford College.  The Seahawks finished tied for third with Elizabethtown as both teams notched a 1-2 tournament record.

Senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) and junior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) both represented St. Mary's (3-12) on the All-Tournament Team after leading the team with 32 and 31 kills, respectively, in three games.

Mullennix paced the Seahawks in their 3-2 (26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 15-6) win over Elizabethtown (4-8) as she dropped a career-best 17 kills while adding five digs and two assists.  Hlavinka was in close pursuit with 15 kills and 6.5 total blocks.

Four players notched double-digit digs against the host Blue Jays as junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) picked up a career-high 25 digs and junior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Spalding) added a personal-best 23.

Sophomore setter Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) led the team with 34 assists in the win while fellow classmate Rachel Wilson (Damascus, Md./Damascus) tallied 18.

In the 3-0 (21-25, 16-25, 23-25) loss to Haverford (6-8), Hlavinka led the team with 10 kills while Mullennix contributed six and Straub dished out 16 assists.  Blanc continued her strong defensive play with 11 digs while sophomore libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) also had 11.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Thursday, September 29 as St. Mary's returns to Capital Athletic Conference action with a match at York College of Pennsylvania (10-7) at 7:00 pm.
