Fredericksburg, Va. – Senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team with nine kills in a 3-0 loss at University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
Mary Washington (10-1, 3-0 CAC) claimed an early 12-4 advantage and continued its strong play in the first set for a 25-17 victory.
St. Mary's (2-10, 0-3 CAC) played the second set much closer as the Seahawks held the lead for most of the match, including posting a 15-10 advantage, before the Eagles slowly clawed their way back and captured the second game by a 28-26 margin.
The third set started out much the same way as the first with Mary Washington jumping out to a 12-4. However, St. Mary's fought back with an 11-5 spurt to pull within two before the hosts used an 8-4 run to close out the set, 25-19, for the match victory.
The Seahawks will be back in action this weekend at the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa. St. Mary's will face No. 11 Juniata College on Friday at 7:00 pm before taking on the host Blue Jays on Saturday at 10:00 am. The Seahawks will end Saturday with a match against Haverford College at noon.
