Seahawks Fall in Overtime Against Marlins

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team (2-4) fell this afternoon in overtime against Virginia Wesleyan (4-1-2). The game ended with a score of 3-2 in overtime minutes.

How it Happened

  • The Marlins scored in the first three minutes of the game and again in the 51st minute making the score 2-0. Goalkeeper, Audra Haines had a great game with two saves in the first half and four in the second half. Haines' six saves compared to Virginia Wesleyan's one save on the evening.

  • During the second half, the Seahawks found some attacking power and scored twice within two minutes of each goal. The first goal was scored by first-year, Kaitlyn Steigner from a header off a corner kick from Gabby Manning

  • St. Mary's College found the back of the net for their second goal of the match during the 80th minute. Midfielder, Maddie Schwarz had a perfectly placed shot that tied up the game. Next, Haines had a crucial save after a Marlins shot which brought the game into overtime minutes.  In the 95th minute of the match, the Marlins scored their third goal, ending the game.

  • Steigner's goal this evening makes her the team's leading scorer with three goals thus far in the season. The Seahawks made their shots count with five total this afternoon compared to the Marlins' 19 shots. 

  • Schwarz and Steigner both had a 1.000 shooting percentage today with their shots being the two points scored by the Seahawks. Manning, Alecia Rotunno, and Ashley Yurich all took one shot apiece this evening as well.
