Four Seahawks Garner All-CAC Women's Soccer Honors; Wirtz Tabbed as Rookie of the Year

Complete All-CAC Teams

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team had four of their players named to the 2010 All-Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer teams as announced Friday by league commissioner, Tom Byrnes.  First-year Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) headlined the quartet with her selection as this year's CAC Rookie of the Year.

Sophomore Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) was the Seahawks' lone representative on the first team while midfielders Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) joined Wirtz on the second team.

Wirtz is the third Seahawk in program history to be picked as the league's women's soccer rookie of the year, following in the footsteps of former St. Mary's standouts, Kathy Holmes '02 (1998) and Sophia Esparza '10 (2006).  The 5-10 goalkeeper was twice selected as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week this season (October 11 and 25).

Wirtz had a solid rookie campaign for the Seahawks, winning the starting role after the first game.  She posted a 1.68 goals against average and recorded three shutouts en route to a 6-7-2 record.  Wirtz notched a season-best nine saves twice, against Virginia Wesleyan College and at Frostburg State University.  Her first collegiate shutout came against 2010 CAC champion, Stevenson University, for the Mustangs' only conference loss of the season.

Eskay nabs her first-ever postseason honor after a breakout sophomore season.  The 5-8 forward just about doubled her scoring output from last season as Eskay tallied team-highs of 13 goals, three assists and 29 points in 2010, following a six-goal, three-assist effort as a rookie.  She finished third in the CAC in goals and fourth in points while tying for eighth in assists.  She scored seven goals in back-to-back league wins at Wesley College (3g, 1a) and versus Hood College (4g) for her first two career hat tricks.  Eskay was a two-time CAC Offensive Player of the Week as well.

Earning her second straight selection as a second team all-star is Sitz.  The 5-4 sophomore directed the Seahawk midfield once again, distributing the ball to her teammates.  Starting all 17 contests, she served 48 of St. Mary's 91 corner kicks and added a goal this season.

Latour wraps up her rookie campaign with an all-conference selection after finishing tied for second in the team's scoring race with three goals and an assist for seven points.  She started all 17 games and helped to bring an aggressive style of play to the midfield.  Latour had the Seahawks' lone goal in their CAC semifinal loss at Frostburg State off a free kick while recording a goal and an assist in a shutout win over Marymount (Va.) University.

St. Mary's finished third in the conference standings with a 6-8-3 (5-2-1 CAC) overall record.  After eliminating the defending CAC champion, University of Mary Washington, in the first round, the Seahawks suffered a 2-1 setback at Frostburg in the semifinals.
