York, Pa. – For the second time this season, first-year goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) earned Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending October 24. The honor was announced Monday afternoon by CAC commissioner Tom Byrnes.
St. Mary's (5-6-3, 5-2-1 CAC), who finished third in the
regular-season conference standings, went undefeated in its two
games of the week. The Seahawks tallied a season-high five
goals in a shutout victory over Marymount (Va.) University mid-week
before playing to a 1-1 draw at University of Mary Washington.
Wirtz started the week with four saves as St. Mary's recorded its fourth shutout of the season against Marymount before closing out the week with four stops in the draw at Mary Washington. She posted a 0.52 goals against average in nearly 175 minutes of action as the Seahawks continue their late-sseason charge to the conference playoffs.
Wirtz is currently fourth in the league in saves (61) and seventh in both goals against average (1.69) and save percentage (.753).
The Seahawks will be back in action this Wednesday, October 27 as they welcome Virginia Wesleyan College to Seahawk Stadium for the regular-season finale at 3:30 pm.
