St. Mary's City, Md. – A strong performance by first-year Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) in goal helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team play to a scoreless draw with non-conference opponent, Washington & Lee University, Sunday afternoon.
St. Mary's (4-6-2) will be back in action Wednesday, October 20 at 3:30 pm when the Seahawks resume Capital Athletic Conference action against Marymount (Va.) University in Seahawk Stadium.
Wirtz, who finished with six saves and her third shutout of the season, denied Washington & Lee's first two attacking opportunities – a pair of pointblank shots off the foot of first-year forward Jasmine Soo (Charleston, W.Va./Culver Academies) in the 8th and 15th minute. Wirtz also picked up a stop in the second overtime period to preserve the 0-0 score.
The Generals (7-4-2) are now unbeaten in three straight contests (1-0-2) as Washington & Lee posted a 17-13 shot advantage as well as a 9-5 corner kick margin.
Junior Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) recorded her fifth shutout of the season with six stops.
