York, Pa. – Senior captain Mackenzie Rayburn (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) earned her first career Capital Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week award as the 5-4 defender received the honor for the week ending February 26 announced Assistant CAC Commissioner Tim Mowrer Monday afternoon.
Rayburn was honored as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring a strong defensive week for No. 19 St. Mary's College of Maryland (3-0) in wins over Virginia Wesleyan College (Feb. 22) and Dickinson College (Feb. 25).
She started the week with team-bests of three ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a 15-5 home-opening win over Virginia Wesleyan.
Rayburn followed that up with a career-best six ground balls and season-best two caused turnovers against Dickinson while holding the Red Devils' top scoring threat, all-region midfielder Maddy Siebold, to just one goal on six shots.
The Seahawks held both Virginia Wesleyan and Dickinson to just five goals in the victories.
She is currently tied for sixth in the conference with nine ground balls and tied for ninth with four caused turnovers.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, March 1 as the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to face No. 6 The Catholic University of America (1-0) for a non-conference at 4:00 p.m.
