Newman Selected to All-Rookie Team

Annapolis, Md. – Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team bolstered her first-year resume yet again with a spot on the 2013 All-Rookie Team as selected by Synapse Sports.

Newman was one of two Capital Athletic Conference rookies named to the list as Megan Strauch of York College of Pennsylvania also garnered a spot.

In addition to her All-Rookie selection, the 5-3 midfielder earned 2013 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Chesapeake Region First Team on Wednesday as well as first team All-Capital Athletic Conference honors on April 26. Newman's biggest honor was her selection as this year's CAC Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year.

Newman became the ninth Seahawk to garner the conference rookie award since the award's inception in 1997, including St. Mary's winning five in a row between 1998 and 2002. She follows in the footsteps of Britney Whitehurst (1998), Kathy Holmes (1999), Courtney Young (2000), Jen Chumley (2001), Sarah Sloane (2002), Danielle Miller (2004), Aileen McCausland (2008), and Lauriann Parker (2010).

Newman made an immediate impact for St. Mary's as she started all 17 contests and finished second in scoring. She tallied a team-best 39 goals and scooped up a team-leading 56 ground balls. Newman also came in second in assists (14) and points (53) as well as caused turnovers (14). She collected eight hat tricks in her rookie campaign, including season-highs of seven goals, two assists, and nine points at the University of Mary Washington on April 10.

Newman ended the 2013 season as the conference leader with 18 free-position goals while ranking second in ground balls, sixth in points, tied for seventh in goals, and ninth in assists.

St. Mary's finished out this year's campaign with an 8-10 (3-3 CAC) overall record, advancing to the semifinals of the 2013 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament for the first time since 2010.
