St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Falls to Dickinson

Brooklandville, Md. – Three players scored twice for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team but the Seahawks dropped a 19-9 decision to Dickinson College Saturday afternoon on neutral ground at St. Paul's School.

Sophomore midfielder Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) and first-years Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) each scored two times for the Seahawks (1-1) while senior attacker Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) added a goal and an assist.

Newman netted St. Mary's first two goals to close the gap to 4-2 at 17:04. Dickinson (1-1) then fired off five unanswered scores to post a 9-2 advantage at 5:06. Shafer and first-year midfielder Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) responded for the Seahawks with consecutive goals to cut the lead to 9-4 at 2:27. The Red Devils headed into halftime with an 11-4 advantage. 

Junior attacker Lauren Jonas (Reisterstown, Md.) and sophomores Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J.) and Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md.) each collected a hat trick to pace Dickinson in the win while senior attacker Linzi Burstein (Alexandria, Va.) contributed three assists.

Dickinson extended its 2-0 run at the end of the first half to 5-0 as the Red Devils opened up the second stanza with three straight. Sartor and Hanacek picked up unassisted goals to close the gap to 14-6 at 18:05. DC ended the game by outscoring the Seahawks, 5-3.

Senior captain Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) collected four draw controls while Newman added three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.

First-year Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and sophomore Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) split time in goal. Dunn made three saves in the start while Shuman came up with three stops as well in the final 20 minutes of the game.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, February 27 when the Seahawks host Christopher Newport University, a future Capital Athletic Conference member, in non-conference action at 4:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
