Owings Mills, Md. – Junior guard Jasmine Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and sophomore Bridget Wilkins (Washington, D.C./Washington Waldorf) combined for 30 points and 13 rebounds in helping to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to a 61-55 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Stevenson University Saturday afternoon.
For the second consecutive game, Jones paced the Seahawks in scoring with a game-best 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting while collecting a career- and game-best six steals, grabbing four rebounds and adding four assists. Wilkins tallied 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and 5-of-6 from the foul line while hauling in a career-best nine rebounds.
A slow offensive start by St. Mary's allowed the Mustangs to establish a 14-point lead at 12:58 as the Seahawks missed 10 of their first 12 attempts from the field. Forwards Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) ended the scoring drought and Stevenson's 6-0 start with back-to-back layups in a 10-second span before the Mustangs went a 13-1 run.
The Seahawks (7-11, 5-4 CAC) whittled down their 14-point deficit as Wilkins pulled down one of her six defensive boards and finished with a layup at the other end to spark a 15-2 run, bringing St. Mary's within one (21-20) at 6:43 as sophomore Raven Owens (Arnold, Md./Severn School) made two free throws.
Stevenson (6-11, 2-7 CAC) maintained the lead and went up 29-20 at 4:28 on senior Amanda Craig's (Wilmington, Del.) two-point field goal. The Seahawks went back to work and achieved their first lead of the game 00:36 as Jones connected on the go-ahead layup after Wilkins made it 31-31 with her only three-pointer of the game at 1:16.
First-year Abbey DeFeo (Columbia, Md./River Hill) made two free throws with 20 ticks left and the two teams headed into the locker rooms in a 33-33 deadlock after both squads committed a turnover and Jones missed two free throws at the buzzer. Wilkins led all players at intermission with 10 points and five rebounds.
Stevenson opened up the second stanza with an 8-3 spurt to stake a 41-36 margin at 16:11 but the Seahawks answered back with a 12-4 run to claim the lead for good as sophomore guard Aura Payne (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) capped the run with her second three-pointer at 9:32. The Mustangs rallied twice, closing the gap to one at 8:36 and erasing a seven-point hole to pull within 54-52 at 2:54, but St. Mary's held on for the win by outscoring the home team, 7-3, over the final three minutes.
Junior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School) paced the Mustangs with a double-double on 14 points and game-best 11 rebounds.
The Seahawks will look to sweep their second regular-season series on Wednesday, January 25 when St. Mary's welcomes Hood College (5-12, 1-8 CAC) to the St. Mary's City campus for a league tilt at 6:00 pm. St. Mary's won 70-41 at Hood on December 10 as Murray scored a season-best 16 points.
