St. Mary's City, Md. – All 13 active members of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team scored in the Seahawks' 98-58 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Wesley College Saturday afternoon. Three Seahawks notched double-digit points while sophomore center Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) hauled in a game- and season-best 10 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Raven Owens (Arnold, Md./Severn School) tallied a game-high 23 points as Owens connected on a career-best six three-point field goals for the second consecutive game.
St. Mary's set a program record with a 48.0-three-point field goal percentage (12-of-25) as the team made a season-best 12 three-point field goals. The previous record of 47.1% (8-of-17) was set on February 14, 1994 against York (Pa.) College.
Sophomore forward Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) put up 14 points and four rebounds while fellow classmate Marché Pearson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) chipped in 10 points and six caroms off the bench. Junior forward Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) dished out a career-high six assists, a fifth of the team's season-best 30 helpers.
The win today places St. Mary's (5-9, 3-2 CAC) in fourth place in the conference regular-season standings while Wesley (2-8, 1-3 CAC) drops into a tie for seventh.
The Seahawks came out with guns blazing this afternoon, shooting a season-best 55.1% from the field, including 58.8% (20-of-34) in the second half, and the St. Mary's reserves outscored the Wolverine bench by a 49 to 1 margin.
Wesley's strong shooting in the first half (50%, 15-of-30) allowed the Wolverines to lead for the first four minutes of the game before a 15-8 run the Seahawks in the driver's seat, holding a 25-19 advantage at 9:54 following an Owens three-point shot. Wesley did not back down and made it a two-point game (25-23) with 8:43 remaining in the half.
St. Mary's put the game out of reach by closing out the first 20 minutes on a 22-9 run to head into the locker room with a convincing 47-32 halftime advantage. Owens netted 17 of her game-best 23 points in the first half to lead all players while Wesley's junior guard Rachelle Allen (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) paced her team with 11.
The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, January 11 as St. Mary's welcomes No. 15 University of Mary Washington (12-0, 5-0 CAC) to Ed Cole Court in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for league action at 1:00 pm.
