St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team fell twice Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with Goucher College, 8-1, and No. 10 Harford Community College, 9-0. The matches were played at Harford Community College.
St. Mary's (2-4) came into the doubleheader on a two-match win streak and looked to make it a four in a row. The Gophers (5-1) came out blazing; advancing themselves to a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches had expired.
Senior Nick Ersoy (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and sophomore Kyle Van Winter (Scaggsville, Md./Good Counsel) posted the best Seahawks result in doubles action, falling 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, while the other two matches ended in 8-1 losses.
Moving into the singles matches, the Gophers continued to extend their lead to 8-0. Ersoy posted the only win on the day for the team, winning an intense match-up in the No. 6 singles match against first-year Josiah Meekins (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School). In this match, the first game had to be taken into a tiebreaker to determine the winner. Ersoy ended up pulling out the win 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Coming off of the tough loss against the Goucher Gophers, the Seahawks had to strap up immediately to take on the No. 10 Harford Community College Fighting Owls.
In the doubles matches against HCC (4-0), the Seahawks were blanked 3-0 with senior captain Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and sophomore Connor McKissick (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) coming in with the closest match at No. 1 doubles, dropping an 8-2 decision.
As the singles matches started, the Fighting Owls lineup featured three nationally-ranked players and HCC came out firing, winning the next six matches handily. Ersoy put up the biggest fight in his No. 3 singles match, taking on No. 33 Xavier Graells (Castellar del Valles, Spain/IES Castellar) and falling 6-1, 6-3.
St. Mary's will take on Frostburg State University its next match as they open up Capital Athletic Conference play in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
