St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore forward Khalid Balogun (Bowie, Md./Bowie) had a hand in both goals Wednesday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team upset No. 16 University of Mary Washington. St. Mary's handed the Eagles a 2-0 setback for UMW's first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season.

The victory is just the fourth the Seahawks have posted over Mary Washington in 46 meetings since the series began in 1979. St. Mary's also halted a five-match skid (0-4-1) against the Eagles.

How It Happened

  • Despite outshooting the Seahawks, 8-0, and posting a 4-0 margin in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, UMW struggled to generate any effective offense as only shot was on target.
  • The Eagles once again controlled the action in the second half with an 11-7 edge in shots as well as a 5-1 advantage in corners. However, it was St. Mary's who broke the scoreless draw.
  • Balogun gave a nice back-heel pass to first-year forward Isaac Ekobo (Hyattsville, Md./Thomas Stone) at the top of the box who then ripped a shot top shelf in the 67th minute for his second game-winning goal of the season.
  • Ten minutes later, the Seahawks gained a two-goal cushion when Balogun fired a rocket of a free kick from outside the box which bounced off of UMW keeper Matt Spencer and landed at the feet of junior captain Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School), who quickly put it away.
  • Mary Washington continued to press offensively but senior captain Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) came up with two great saves to preserve the win.

For the Seahawks (10-5-0, 6-1-0 CAC)

  • Scorers: Ekobo (1 goal); Kearson (1 goal); Kearson (2 assists)
  • Goalkeeper: Haussler (5 saves, 0 goals allowed, 90:00)
  • St. Mary's collected its seventh shutout win of the season with seven shots (four on goal) and one corner kick.

For Mary Washington (11-3-1, 6-1-0 CAC)

  • Scorer: None
  • Goalkeeper: Matt Spencer (2 saves, 2 goals allowed, 90:00)
  • The Eagles put up 19 shots (five on goal) and nine corners as their seven-game win streak was snapped.

  • St. Mary's is now in a two-way tie for second with UMW in the conference standings as well as one point behind the CAC's top team, Christopher Newport University (6-0-1), who played to a 0-0 draw with Salisbury University tonight.
