St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) dropped a game-best 28 points Saturday afternoon in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team to a 72-59 win over Frostburg State University for the Capital Athletic Conference series sweep.
St. Mary's (15-4, 12-2 CAC) maintains a strangle hold of the top spot in the CAC with today's seventh consecutive victory. The Seahawks hope to extend the win streak to eight on Wednesday, February 11th when they travel to York College of Pennsylvania for a conference tilt at 8:00 p.m.
LaGuerre, this week's CAC Player of the Week, added five steals, three assists, and two rebounds to his stat line while junior captain Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) and first-year guard Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) each tallied 14 points. Junior guard Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) came in with 11 and eight rebounds.
The Seahawks posted a 44-33 rebounding margin as first-year forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) grabbed a game-best nine boards, Smith hauled in seven, and Spurrier pulled down six.
Frostburg State (10-11, 6-8 CAC) may have scored first but the Seahawks rolled to a 24-12 advantage at 8:26 as Smith scored eight and LaGuerre had five in the 24-10 run. St. Mary's would go on to stretch that lead to a 40-24 halftime advantage.
LaGuerre and Smith each picked up 11 points in the first half to lead all scorers while junior guard David Patrick (Columbia, Md./Hammond) netted 10 to pace the Bobcats.
St. Mary's owned a double-digit margin the entire second stanza as the closest that the Bobcats came was 47-37 at 13:27 behind a triple by junior guard Nick Smoot (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill).
Junior forward Shawn Henson (Baltimore, Md./Polytech) was the scoring and rebounding leader for Frostburg State with 13 points and nine boards while Patrick finished with his 10 first-half points.
