St. Mary's City, Md. – Twenty-nine points from senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) and a double-double from junior guard Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team to a three-way tie for first-place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (11-4, 8-2 CAC) posted a convincing 78-62 win over Marymount University (14-3, 8-2 CAC), who entered Saturday's contest as the top team in the CAC. Wins by the Seahawks and Christopher Newport University (13-4, 8-2 CAC) forged a three-way tie for first in the standings as all three have beat each other.
Saturday's victory avenged St. Mary's four-point loss (66-62) at Marymount on December 6th. The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28th, traveling to the Eastern Shore to complete series sweep of Salisbury University. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. On December 3rd, St. Mary's picked up a 72-62 win in front of the home crowd behind 29 from LaGuerre.
LaGuerre tallied a game-high 29 points as he went 12-of-17 from the free throw line while grabbing five rebounds and four steals. Brooks collected his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards while first-year forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) almost had a double-double with season-high 10 points and nine caroms.
Marymount only owned a two-point lead for just 37 seconds the entire game as the Saints made the first field goal of the contest at 19:04. After that, St. Mary's rolled to a 20-11 lead at 6:29 as Brooks bookended a 20-9 run with a layup and three-pointer. The Saints closed the gap to five on a Dmitri Rucker layup at 5:15 but would get no closer as St. Mary's claimed a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Brooks led all players at intermission with 13 points and seven rebounds while the Seahawks shot 52.2% from the field for the first half. The Marymount starters combined for just six points in the first 20 minutes as Rucker paced them off the bench with six points and two boards.
LaGuerre netted seven points in the opening 14-8 SMCM run in the first four minutes of the second stanza, capped it off with a steal and dunk for a 15-point advantage. LaGuerre's second dunk at 5:19 stretched the Seahawk lead to the biggest margin of the game, 67-50.
The loss snapped a five-game win streak for Marymount. Three Saints notched double-digit scoring performances as senior forward JC Hoellich (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds. This week's CAC Player of the Week, senior guard Jesse Konadu (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) and first-year guard D'Ondre Stockman (Upper Marlboro, Md./Pallotti) each added 10.
