St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team picked up their second consecutive win Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) scores 28 in leading St. Mary's to a 65-53 Capital Athletic Conference win over Mary Washington.
LaGuerre knocked down six three-pointers in the win while junior captain Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) contributed 15 points and five rebounds. Senior center MacGyver Biniak (Elkridge, Md./Howard) continued his dominance on the boards with fourth consecutive double-digit rebounding performance as Biniak hauled in game-best 10 caroms plus chipped in three points and three steals.
St. Mary's (4-3, 2-1 CAC) used a 20-7 run to build a 29-15 lead at 8:14 as LaGuerre scored 16 in the run. Mary Washington crept its way back into the game, putting together a 15-0 run behind a pair of long-range shots to stake its only lead of the game, 30-29 at 2:33. Five points from LaGuerre, including a three-point basket at buzzer, sent the Seahawks into the locker room with a 35-30 halftime lead.
LaGuerre led all scorers with 21 point in the first 20 minutes while senior guard Taylor Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) paced the Eagles with eight.
The Seahawks moved to a seven-point lead seconds into the start of the second half as Biniak laid it in. A pair of three-pointers by sophomore guard Brent Mahoney (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) pulled within 39-38 at 17:13 but the Eagles would not get any closer as St. Mary's worked to keep UMW at bay. The home team ended the game on a 12-2 run for their 12-point margin of victory.
Mary Washington (0-8, 0-3 CAC) remains winless on the season and were led in today's action by Mahoney's 12 points while Johnson finished with 10.
After surviving finals week, St. Mary's will return to the hardwood on next Saturday, December 20th as the Seahawks travel to Chester, Pennsylvania to take on Widener University in a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
