Bryn Athyn, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team returned to the win column Tuesday night with a 79-54 non-conference road win over Bryn Athyn College. Three starters scored in double digits as the Seahawks shot a season-best 57.9% from the floor.
Senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) paced St. Mary's in scoring for the fifth time this season as LaGuerre tallied game-best 18 points, season-high eight rebounds, and four assists. Junior captain Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) contributed 15 points and seven boards while junior guard Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) chipped in 10 points and four steals.
The Seahawks (3-3) never trailed in tonight's contest as they opened up the game with a 13-3 run and never looked back. Sophomore guard Ryan Grant (Adamstown, Md./Goretti) knocked down his second three-pointer in less than two minutes at 11:49 to give St. Mary's a double-digit lead that they did not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
St. Mary's headed into the locker room with a 45-26 advantage, outscoring the Lions by a 32-12 margin in the paint. The Seahawks also shot an impressive 62.5% (20-of-32) from the floor and Spurrier led all scorers with a dozen points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Seahawks boasted a lead of 20 points or more for the entire second half, including their biggest lead of 68-38 at 7:52 following a layup in the paint by senior forward Lee Jordan, Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Free Academy).
For the game, St. Mary's staked a 43-33 rebounding margin as senior center MacGyver Biniak (Elkridge, Md./Howard) grabbed a game- and career-best 12 caroms for the second consecutive game while picking up six points.
Bryn Athyn (0-5) was led in the loss by first-year center James Flagg (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury). Flagg came off the bench for 14 points and nine rebounds while fellow classmate Jihaad Fluellen (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson) notched nine in seven minutes.
St. Mary's will return to Capital Athletic Conference action this Saturday, December 13th as the Seahawks host University of Mary Washington on Ed Cole Court in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
