Dover, Del. – Three Seahawk starters scored in double digits as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team routed the Wesley College Wolverines, 94-68, in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Devin Spencer (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) notched a game-best 19 points to lead all players while fellow classmate Chris Hutchinson (Owings Mills, Md./New Town) added 13 and sophomore forward Christian MacAuley (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) put up 10. First-year guard Jerome Tolson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) came off the bench to chip in a season-best 10 points as Tolson went 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
The Seahawks (18-6, 12-3 CAC) used a balanced effort on the boards to post a 43-30 rebounding advantage. Hutchinson paced the team with seven caroms while junior forward Jeff Haus (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore guard Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) each hauled in six rebounds.
As a team, St. Mary's shot 57.1% from the floor and went to the foul line 43 times, connecting on 32 free throws to finish with 74.4-percent for the contest.
The Seahawks never trailed in the game as St. Mary's led by a double-figure margin from the 12:34-minute mark of the first half, building a 20-point lead with 3:31 remaining in the first half. The Seahawks cruised to a 45-26 halftime advantage behind Spencer's 13 first-half points. Wesley's senior guard Chris Douglas (Landover, Md./Jericho Prep Academy) paced his team with 10 points in the first half.
The Seahawk dominance continued in the second half as St. Mary's posted a 20+ point advantage for the final 5:26 of the contest, shooting 57.9% from the field and 25-of-29 from the charity stripe.
Douglas finished with a team-best 18 points while junior forward Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) registered a double-double on 17 points and game-best 10 rebounds.
St. Mary's will be back in action next Saturday, February 18 as the Seahawks welcome Frostburg State University (12-11, 9-5 CAC) to the Michael P. O'Brien ARC Arena for the regular-season finale (and Senior Day) at 4:00 pm. The Seahawks will look to avenge their 85-72 loss to Frostburg State from January 14 despite having three players score in double digits.
