St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior forward Brian Grashof (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and sophomore guard Kyle Wise (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) each put forth a career effort as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team posted an 80-70 Capital Athletic Conference win over Wesley College Saturday afternoon.
Grashof came off the bench to pour in a career-best 18 points as he did not miss a shot from the field all day, going 6-for-6 from the field and knocking down a career-best two three-point field goals. Wise was 4-for-5 (2-2 from downtown) from the floor for his career-high 14.
Wesley (4-9, 2-2 CAC) erased an early four-point deficit and led 11-8 at 14:38 behind a layup by sophomore forward David Langan (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial). That would be the Wolverines' last lead of the game as St. Mary's used a 20-10 run to establish a seven-point lead at 4:47. Two free throws by senior guard Darrell Johnson (New Castle, Del./Howard) capped a 7-2, closing the gap to 30-28 at 2:39.
The Seahawks (11-3, 5-0 CAC) owned a 37-29 halftime lead as Grashof scored all seven of the team's points in the final 1:33 of the first half. Grashof led all players with 11 points and five rebounds while Langan paced Wesley with eight points and four boards.
Johnson's jumper at 16:42 pulled the Wolverines within one as Wesley started the second stanza with an 8-1 run. St. Mary's responded with a 14-2 run to distance themselves from the visitors by 13 points at 13:44. The Seahawks never looked back despite Wesley shooting an impressive 60.7% from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
Four of Wesley's starters scored in double figures as Langan led the way with 17 points while grabbing a game-best nine boards.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, January 11 when St. Mary's welcomes the University of Mary Washington (10-4, 5-0 CAC) to Ed Cole Court in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a league match-up. The battle of conference unbeatens will tip-off at 3:00 pm.
