ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - First year forward Celina Kaufman notched the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute of action on Wednesday (Sept. 11) evening to keep the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team (4-0) perfect on the season. St. Mary's - 2, Randolph-Macon - 0

How It Happened

  • The first half of action was well-played on the defensive end of the field. Both the Seahawks and Yellow Jackets were held scoreless throughout the first and second quarters. However, the Seahawks fired off plenty of shots in the opening half with six compared to the Yellow Jackets zero. In addition, the Seahawk defense played a player down for a combined seven minutes in the second stanza and managed to keep Randolph-Macon off the scoreboard.

  • St. Mary's College broke the scoreless tie in the third quarter when Veronica Maring battled for possession in front of the cage and tapped a shot into the back of the goal in the 40th minute. The Seahawks didn't hold the lead long as the Yellow Jackets evened the game up at one in the 41st minute of play.

  • In the fourth quarter, Kaufman received an accurate pass from Hannah Dietrich and whacked a shot past the opposing goalkeeper in the 52nd minute. The Seahawks buckled down defensively for the remainder of the game and held on for the victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Kaufman and Maring led the Seahawks with two points each off one goal apiece. Dietrich finished the evening with one point from an assist. In goal, Kelbey Egerland improved to 4-0, allowing just one goal.

  • As a team, the Seahawks held the advantage in penalty corners (6-2) and shots (11-3).
