Chandler, Ariz. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team has racked up several academic awards from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) over the last three Mondays, including today's release of the 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.
The Seahawks picked up their 16th straight Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award on March 9th. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum team GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year. St. Mary's, who posted a 3.279 team GPA during the fall, was one of 120 Division III schools recognized by the NFHCA. All but one of the seven Capital Athletic Conference schools with field hockey teams made the list.
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and first-year forward Shelby Ennis (Westover, Md./Washington) then represented St. Mary's on the 2014 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division III Scholar of Distinction list as announced March 16th. These outstanding student-athletes achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year.
Shuman, a psychology major and an educational studies minor, recorded a 3.92 GPA through seven semesters of academic coursework while Ennis, a biochemistry major, notched a 4.0 GPA in her first semester as a Seahawk. The twosome was part of a nine-person contingent representing the conference. University of Mary Washington led the way with three while Frostburg State University and Salisbury University each had two. Wesley College and York College of Pennsylvania each had one selection.
Today, NFHCA Executive Director Jennifer Goodrich announced the 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad and St. Mary's had 10 players named to the squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year. Since 2000, St. Mary's has earned 183 academic squad honors.
Shuman joined fellow seniors Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg), Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), and Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) on the squad while Kevyn Jorgenson (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg Country) and Carly Todd (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield) represented the sophomore class.
First-years Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake), Sophie Michel (Westminster, Md./Westminster), and Megan Moore (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) joined Ennis on the team while Shuman and Bishop are both four-year award recipients for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's finished 2014 with a 10-7 (3-3 CAC) record, marking the second consecutive 10-win season under seventh-year head coach Katie Newkirk.
