St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team saw their 2014 season come to an end Sunday afternoon in the first round of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship Tournament. The fourth-seeded Seahawks dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 5 seed York College of Pennsylvania.
The campaign finished out for St. Mary's with a 10-7 (3-3 CAC) record, marking the second consecutive 10-win season under seventh-year head coach Katie Newkirk.
The year rolls on for York (13-6) as the Spartans advance to next Wednesday's conference tournament semifinal matchup with No. 1 seed Salisbury University.
York used a goal in each half in posting its third consecutive win. The Spartans tallied a 17-11 shot advantage and 12-7 penalty corner margin.
First-year forward Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) put YCP on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal at 16:00 for her 11th of the season. First-year forward Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion) scooped a shot towards the far post which junior defender Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) batted down for a defensive save. Mallory was there to sweep it in the rebound for the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) ripped a shot towards the near post and sophomore forward Alexa Taylor (York, Pa./Red Lion) was there to deflect over the leg of senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) for a two-goal cushion.
Bishop finished the afternoon with seven saves while first-year Jessica Everett (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) picked up five stops and Posey recorded a defensive save in the Spartans' fourth shutout of the season.
