Dover, Del. – For the second consecutive season, the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team has put together a seven-game win streak as the Seahawks tallied their seventh straight victory Thursday night. St. Mary's posted a 3-0 shutout triumph over Wesley College to remain undefeated in Capital Athletic Conference action.
St. Mary's (10-3, 3-0 CAC) and Wesley (5-9, 0-3 CAC) have traded wins in their last five meetings, including tonight, and the Seahawks own a 3-2 edge in that span. Overall, St. Mary's is 9-4 all-time against the Wolverines.
Senior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) has now tallied at least one point in seven consecutive games as Edwards notched her 14th goal of the season at 13:19 off an assist by sophomore forward Carly Todd (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield).
The Seahawks boasted a 6-4 edge in shots while Wesley staked a 3-2 margin in penalty corners in the first half. Senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) made two stops and the Seahawk defenders blocked one shot to keep the Wolverines off the board in the first 35 minutes.
Shots were even at six apiece in the second stanza and both goalkeepers picked up four stops. Edwards broke through at 49:49 with an unassisted tally for a two-goal Seahawk lead. She now ranks second on the Seahawks' all-time single-season goals (15) and points (33) lists.
St. Mary's edged the Wolverines, 12-10, in shots while Wesley dominated corners by a 10-3 margin.
Bishop finished the night with six saves for the team's fourth shutout win of the season while senior Sarah Daniels (Pocomoke, Md./Washington) notched six stops as well in Wesley's eighth loss in a row.
St. Mary's is on the road for its next Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday, October 18th as the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to square off against No. 18 University of Mary Washington (11-3, 2-0 CAC) at 1:00 p.m.
