Edwards Powers St. Mary's Field Hockey Past York (Pa.)

St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) found the back of the cage twice to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference win over York College of Pennsylvania on a soggy Saturday afternoon.

Today's triumph extended the Seahawks' win streak to five as St. Mary's picked up its third straight win over York. However, the Spartans still hold a 16-10 advantage in the series since it began in 1994.

Edwards began the scoring early at 2:34 as sophomore forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) redirected her own rebound towards the goal line and Edwards deflected the ball in for her 11th goal of the season.

Junior forward Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) had a hand in St. Mary's second goal of the day at 15:14, sending a loose ball towards Edwards who tipped it in for her team-leading 12th score.

St. Mary's (8-3, 2-0 CAC) maintained its two-goal lead through halftime as the Seahawks posted a 9-8 edge in shots in the first half. York tallied a 5-4 margin in penalty corners but senior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) came up with four saves to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard in the first 35 minutes.

York (10-3, 1-1 CAC), who received votes in this week's NFHCA poll, finally broke through at 56:22 as first-year forward Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) put back a loose ball high over Bishop.

The Spartans doubled up on St. Mary's in shots, 6-3, but the Seahawks kept them off the board for the remainder of the contest and held on for the one-goal win.

York finished with a 14-12 margin in shots while corners were equal at seven apiece.

Bishop notched six saves in her eighth win of the season while first-year Jessica Everett (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) tallied five stops in the Spartans' first conference loss of 2014, snapping a three-game win streak.

St. Mary's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when the Seahawks welcome Virginia Wesleyan College to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 1:30 p.m.

Before the game starts, St. Mary's six seniors – Bishop, Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton), Edwards, Morgan Lempke (Easton, Md./Easton), Rachel Natoli (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) – will be recognized for their solid St. Mary's careers.
