St. Mary's Baseball Bats Wake Up For Second Game Win on Doubleheader

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split their final Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon with Frostburg State University. Frostburg State (21-12, 8-9 CAC) outlasted the Seahawks, 4-3 in 10 innings, for the first game victory while St. Mary's exploded for 10 runs on 18 hits to take the nightcap, 10-2, on Senior Day.

Before the game, the Seahawks honored their four seniors – infielders Joe Bavaro (Brick, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) and Bennett Garner (Bowie, Md./Bowie), catcher Sean Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun), and pitcher Matt Henigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) – for their years of dedication and leadership to the program.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Frostburg opened up the 10th frame with consecutive hits, including a leadoff double by Jason Paredes, for runners on second and third. Evan Colon laid down a sacrifice bunt to drive in Paredes for the eventual game-winning run. Junior RHP Tim Hand (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) sat down the next two batters to keep the Bobcats to just a one-run lead.
  • The Seahawks were shut out in the 10th by Mike Livingston as Livingston retired tehs ide in order and collected his sixth save of the season.
  • St. Mary's had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by first-year outfielder Sam James (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and an RBI double by first-year infielder Andy Collins (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee).
  • The Bobcats got one back in the top of the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field by Kyle Burger to score Mike Takovich, who had a leadoff single. FSU then went up 3-2 in the eighth with a Takovich RBI double and another Burger sac fly.
  • The Seahawks evened up the score in their half of the eighth as junior outfielder Dakota Merritt (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) scored on a wild pitch after getting on with a leadoff walk.
  • It was three up, three down for both teams in the ninth.

  • James connected on a season-best three hits for the second time this season while Hand (0-6) was left still searching for his first win of the season, giving up the game-winning run on two hits in the 10th.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • It was all St. Mary's in the nightcap as the Seahawk bats began making noise to the tune of 18 hits, seven of which were extra-base hits.
  • The Seahawks put up eight runs in the first six innings, including a four-run sixth. Highlighting St. Mary's 8-0 run was junior outfielder Lucas Kraft's (Boyds, Md./Clarksburg) first career home run to lead off the sixth.
  • Frostburg avoided the shutout with two runs in the seventh, scoring on a double play while Brock Antognoni drove in the other run with a two-out RBI single down the right field line.
  • St. Mary's tacked on two more runs in the eighth for good measure behind a pair of RBI doubles from junior outfielder Holden Marshall (Towson, Md./Friends) and Bavaro.
