St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore lefty Nick Raimondo (Annapolis, Md./South River) pitched 6.0 solid innings in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team to their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season. The Seahawks (4-10, 1-4 CAC) posted a 6-2 win over University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon for their third straight win over the Eagles.
Raimondo scattered six hits in just giving up one run while striking out a career-best five batters and walking only one. St. Mary's provided Raimondo with all the run support he would need with a six-run second inning.
Mary Washington (13-5, 4-5 CAC) staked an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when this week's CAC Hitter of the Week, senior catcher Jono Haught (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland), cracked a full count RBI single to right field to score junior SS Justin Kime (Stafford, Va./Patrick Henry CC) who connected on a one-out single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Raimondo struck out the next batter and then Haught was thrown out trying to steal second by junior catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) to keep the Eagles' to just one run in the first.
The Seahawks went scoreless in their half of the first before responding with six runs in the bottom of the second on just one hit and two errors. St. Mary's loaded the bases when sophomore Nick McIntyre (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) committed an error on what would've been the final out of the inning.
Senior captain Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) then singled to bring home Goodie to tie up the game and keep the bases loaded. Following an UMW pitching change, sophomore RHP Paul McClure (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) then walked in three more Seahawk runs for a 4-1 SMCM lead.
After first-year Joe Thompson (Landenburg, Pa./West Grove) relieved McClure, senior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) crossed home plate on a wild pitch for a four-run lead. Senior captain Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) then scored on an Eagle error by Kime. UMW finally got out of the inning when the Seahawks attempted a rundown for another run and the runner on first was tagged out.
The Eagles tacked on one more run in the seventh as Haught ripped a two-out single that hit off the first base bag just fair to score sophomore OF Kyle Bynum (Portsmouth, Va./Virginia Tech) who drew a walk.
Green led a balanced Seahawk offense with two hits and an RBI while UMW was Haught's two RBIs and three hits from Kime. McIntyre dropped to 3-2 on the season after giving up four runs (none earned) on two hits in 1.2 innings.
The Seahawks hope to stretch their first win streak of the season to three when St. Mary's travels to Middletown, Pa. to take on Penn Stat Harrisburg for a CAC doubleheader on Sunday, March 29th at 12:00 p.m.
