Fort Pierce, Fla. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team wrapped up their Florida Coast Spring Training trip on Thursday with a 13-5 victory over Messiah College as senior captain Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) led the way with four hits and four RBI.
It was a big first inning for both teams as the two sides combined for 12 runs on 11 hits and one error. Messiah (2-4) established a 4-0 lead in the top of the first behind a two RBI single by junior Josh Good (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central) and an RBI single by first-year Adam Janney (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun).
St. Mary's (2-8) responded with eight runs of its own in its half of the first as Eaker stroked a two RBI single, junior designated hitter Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) connected on a two RBI double, senior captain Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) smacked a three RBI double, and senior outfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) picked up an RBI single.
No more runs were scored until the bottom of the fourth when Dioguardo led off with a bunt single then stole second before scoring on Eaker's two-out single to left field to give the Seahawks a 9-4 advantage. Messiah got one back in the fifth when junior Ben Sollenberger (Gainesville, Fla./Santa Fe) began the inning with a triple and then scored on junior Joseph Saufley's (Hershey, Pa.) single.
St. Mary's tacked on three more runs in the seventh as junior infielder Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on Eaker's single and stole third before scoring on a Falcon error. Eaker scored on a single by senior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) and junior catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) scored on an error.
The Seahawks sealed the deal with one more score in the eighth as Eaker notched his fourth single of the game to bring home Dioguardo who had led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on Roemer's walks, and then went to third on the double play.
Sophomore starter Nick Raimondo (Annapolis, Md./South River) recorded his first career win as Raimondo struck out three, walked three, and gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits in 7.0 innings. Senior Peter Fisher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Christian) suffered the loss for the Falcons after allowing seven runs on five hits in 0.2 innings.
Eaker finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored while Dioguardo was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Saufley paced Messiah with a 3-for-5 effort while Good had two RBI.
The Seahawks return to the Hawk's Nest this Saturday, March 21st and welcome Southern Virginia University for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
