Ashland, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team put together an eight-run performance Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks wrapped up their three-game series at Randolph-Macon College. However, the Yellow Jackets edged St. Mary's for the series sweep with a 12-8 victory.
The Seahawks (0-3) struck early as they staked a 3-0 lead in the first. Senior outfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was hit by junior Austin Bain (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) to lead off the inning before crossing home plate for a 1-0 lead after back-to-back singles by infielders Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) and Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara).
The next two first-inning runs resulted from back-to-back hit by pitches with bases loaded. St. Mary's finished its half of the inning with three runs on two hits while leaving two on base. Randolph-Macon responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first, posting three runs on one hit and one error while leaving one on.
St. Mary's stayed ahead 4-3 in the second as Roemer scored his second of the day. The Seahawks ended the inning with one run on one hit and one error. The one-run SMCM lead held until the bottom of the fourth when the Yellow Jackets knotted the game once again with a run on two hits with one left on.
R-MC (3-0) claimed its first lead of the game with three runs in the fifth for a 7-4 advantage in picking up three runs and five hits with two left on. Junior catcher Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) cracked a two-run homer to lead the Yellow Jackets in the inning.
The Seahawks regained the upper hand with back-to-back two-run innings in the sixth and seventh innings for an 8-7 lead. Senior outfielder Matt Holdefer's (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) two-run, two-out homer highlighted sixth-inning action while a two-run double by junior catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) was the big hit in the seventh.
Randolph-Macon broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning, scoring five on five hits with two left on. Senior pitcher JT Williamson (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) opened up the eighth with back-to-back outs before giving up a walk, a single, and hitting Goodie to load the bases. Williamson got out of the jam with a strikeout. Williamson then retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the win.
Rowe led the Seahawks at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, walking once and scoring one run. Senior Patrick Watson (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) started the game for St. Mary's on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings with career-best five strikeouts and two walks. Watson allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Junior Garrett Pope (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) was saddled with the loss after 2.0 innings of relief, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Seahawks will look to snap their three-game skid this Saturday-Sunday, February 14-15 as they host Gwynedd Mercy College in a three-game series.
