York, Pa. – Senior captain Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) picked up the season's first Pitcher of the Week award from the Capital Athletic Conference as Beatty earned the award for the week ending February 16.
The 6-2 right-handed pitcher guided the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (1-0) to a 4-3 season-opening win over conference newcomer, Christopher Newport University, on February 10th. Beatty threw 5.0 innings of one-hit ball, giving up just one unearned run. He struck out four Captains while walking only two.
The win marked Beatty's first as a Seahawk after he transferred in last season following two years at NCAA Division II Shepherd University.
Beatty currently leads the conference in wins (1-0) and ERA (0.00) while ranking second in innings pitched (5.0) and strikeouts (4). He is also third in strikeouts per game with a 7.20 average.
The Seahawks (1-0) will be back in action this weekend as St. Mary's hosts Mt. St. Mary's College in a three-game series on February 22-23 at the Hawk's Nest. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 11:00 a.m. while Sunday's single game starts at 11:00 a.m.
