Newport News, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team opened up the 2014 regular and Capital Athletic Conference season on the right foot as the Seahawks hung on for a 4-3 victory over league newcomer, Christopher Newport University, on a chilly Monday afternoon.
After first-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall College) led off the top of the ninth with a double, junior LF Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) connected on a bunt single for runners on the corners. Christopher Newport then intentionally walked senior captain Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) to load the bases with one out and caused the force out on the next play.
Junior DH Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) notched the game-winning RBI as Eady reached on a fielder's choice and Rowe came in for the eventual game-winning run. St. Mary's carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the ninth.
The Seahawks (1-0, 1-0 CAC) received solid pitching from its trio of pitchers that entered today's action. Senior captain Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) picked up his first career win as a Seahawk as Beatty threw a one-hitter with an unearned run in 5.0 innings of work, striking out four and walking two of the 18 batters faced.
First-year LHP Nicholas Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River) came in for 2.2 innings and gave up a run on three hits with two strikeouts. Senior captain Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) closed out the game for the save, allowing a run on two hits with one strikeout in 1.1 IP.
Dioguardo paced the Seahawks at the plate with two hits while Eady finished the game with two RBI as he went 1-for-4 with a walk.
St. Mary's struck first in the opening inning with one run as junior C Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) doubled to bring home Dioguardo. The Captains, who received votes in the preseason polls, responded in kind in the same inning, scoring on an error to knot the game at 1-1.
The Seahawks went up 2-1 in the second as junior SS Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) came home on a pass ball. St. Mary's then went up 3-1 in the seventh as Eady singled with two outs to score junior CF Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster).
CNU (1-1, 0-1 CAC) cut the lead to one with a two-out RBI single in the eighth. The Captains tried to force extra innings in the ninth as sophomore Travis Younger (Chatham, Va.) led off with a single and then scored from second on a two-out RBI single by junior Preston Grissom (Chesapeake, Va.). Grissom then stole second before Coe ended the rally by striking out sophomore Collin Wilber (Yorktown, Va.).
Weather permitting, St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, February 15th as the Seahawks open up the Hawk's Nest with a non-conference doubleheader against the visiting Gwynedd Mercy College Griffins at 11:00 a.m.
