St. Mary's City, Md. - The Third Annual Hawktober Festival at St. Mary's College of Maryland is upon us as the festivities will occur this Saturday, October 3 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Hawktober Festival is a great opportunity for alumni and friends of the College to return to their roots and reconnect with St. Mary's and old friends.
Director of Alumni Relations and Planned Giving, David Sushinsky '02, exclaimed, "Hawktober Festival is our new spin on homecoming at St. Mary's. After last year, we've proven that Hawktober Festival is a very successful way of bringing our alumni back to campus and I look forward to watching it grow each year. Now that the Alumni Office is coordinating with many other departments on campus, we've been able to make this one of the biggest campus events of the year."
Piggybacking on Sushinsky's comments, Scott Devine, Director of Athletics & Recreation, commented, "We are looking to continue to build off of the momentum from the previous two years and keep our Hawktober Festival growing. The turnout was tremendous last year and we hope to see even larger numbers returning to campus this year, combining with all of the festivities of Homecoming/Family Weekend. From the Petruccelli 5K to the Cardboard Boat Race, along with the home varsity athletic events and alumni get-togethers, it is sure to be a fun time here at the College."
This year, the Hawktober Festival will run in conjunction with Family Weekend so there will be plenty of events around campus to entertain the masses.
"I think the important thing to recognize is that this is for all alumni, not just for those that played sports when they were here," added Sushinsky.
Devine concurred with Sushinsky saying, "Our long term hope with Hawktober Festival is to get the alumni base of the College to circle the first weekend of every October as the time to plan to come back to St. Mary's and spend the weekend or at least that Saturday with us. We want the early October return to campus to become habit forming."
Kicking off the Festival will be the 1st Annual SMCM Hawktober Festival Golf Tournament on Friday at the Cedar Point Golf Course with a shotgun start at 9:00 am. Saturday's events begin with the Petruccelli 5K Run/Walk at 8:00 am with proceeds benefitting the College's Safe Ride Program and the SMCM Alumni Scholarship Fund. There will be three varsity athletic events in action as well as numerous alumni games to get everyone's competitive juices flowing.
Saturday will feature a tent near Seahawk Stadium where alums and their families can hang out to enjoy the varsity events as well as food and beverage.
