New Orleans, La. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's and women's cross country teams were recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday for their academic prowess as well as their work on the field during the 2017 campaign.
Both programs received the 2017 NCAA Division III Cross Country Team All-Academic Award under leadership of seventh-year head coach Tom Fisher.
Overall, there were 388 teams honored by the USTFCCCA. Of those teams, 221 of them were women's programs and 167 of them were men's. For a team to be considered for this distinction, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional meet and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10 on a scale of 4.0.
The Seahawk men picked up their sixth overall All-Academic Team award, and first since 2014, as St. Mary's posted a 3.39 team grade point average during the fall semester. This is the highest team GPA the Seahawks have posted in the nine-year history of the program. St. Mary's was one of four Capital Athletic Conference teams to make the cut as Marymount (Va.) University (3.3 GPA), Salisbury University (3.16), and York College of Pennsylvania (3.3) also garnered the award.
The St. Mary's women collected its eighth All-Academic Team award in a row with a 3.43 team GPA during the fall semester. The squad was one of five conference institutions to be recognized as Marymount (Va.) University (3.33), Salisbury University (3.59), Southern Virginia University (3.6), and York College of Pennsylvania (3.36 GPA) also made the cut.
This season, the women placed 35th at the 2017 NCAA Mideast Regional for the program's second-highest placement in the Seahawks' nine-year history since St. Mary's 34th-place finish in 2013.
