St. Marys Women Finish Second at York Invitational
York, Pa. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's cross country team showed improvement Saturday morning as the Seahawks had three runners finish in the top 15 at the York (Pa.) College Invitational I.
The St. Mary's women ran a 5,000-meter race, notching 86 points for a second-place finish. The Seahawks just finished ahead of Capital Athletic Conference foe, Hood College (3rd) by three points, while besting fellow CAC opponents, Stevenson University (5th), Marymount (Va.) University (6th), and Gallaudet University (7th) as well. The Seahawks posted an average time of 23:40.20.
Freshman Katie Phipps (Severna Park, Md./Chesapeake) was the team's top finisher as Phipps posted a time of 22:07.91 to place sixth out of 64 runners. St. Mary's next highest finisher was freshman Kristin Hay (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) as Hay came in ninth with a time of 22:31.12.
Sophomore Kathleen Tatem (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was also in the top 15 with Tatem's 13th-place finish with a time of 23:12.23.
Rounding out the race for the Seahawks were freshman Margaret Lillie (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), junior Christi Ford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and sophomore Laura Hewins (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy). Lillie placed 27th in 24:47.50 followed by Ford in 36th with a time of 25:42.22, while Hewins was 40th in 27:10.28.
The Seahawks will return to action next Saturday, September 26 at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md. The race will begin at 10:00 a.m.
The addition of men's and women's cross country this past spring brought St. Mary's athletic offerings to 17 sports.
Affiliated with NCAA Division III, St. Mary's became the ninth and final member institution of the Capital Athletic Conference to sponsor both men's and women's cross country. The Seahawks joined Gallaudet University, Hood College, the University of Mary Washington, Marymount (Va.) University, Salisbury University, Stevenson University, Wesley College, and York (Pa.) College.
