Seahawk Women Perform Well at Goucher Classic

Towson, Md. - Freshman Katie Phipps' (Severna Park, Md./Chesapeake) seventh-place finish at Saturday's Goucher College Cross Country Classic helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish.
Phipps notched a time of 26:55.89 to place in the top 10 as the Seahawks averaged 28:46.02 in the 6,000-meter race.
St. Mary's next top finisher was freshman Kristin Hay (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) as Hay tallied a top 15 finish, coming in 14th with a time of 28:04.62.
Sophomore Kathleen Tatem (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) placed 18th with a time of 28:44.52, while freshman Margaret Lillie (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) was in close pursuit at 19th in 29:06.29.
Rounding out the race for the Seahawks were junior captain Christi Ford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), freshman Katie Morgan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and sophomore Laura Hewins (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy). Ford was 29th in 30:58.75 followed by Morgan in 33rd place (32:26.23), who was running in her first race of the season. Hewins placed 35th in 34:40.51.
The Seahawks will return to action Saturday, October 17 at the Hood College Open at the Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville, Md. The race will begin at 10:00 am.
The addition of men's and women's cross country during the spring of 2009 brought St. Mary's athletic offerings to 17 sports.
Affiliated with NCAA Division III, St. Mary's became the ninth and final member institution of the Capital Athletic Conference to sponsor both men's and women's cross country. The Seahawks joined Gallaudet University, Hood College, the University of Mary Washington, Marymount (Va.) University, Salisbury University, Stevenson University, Wesley College, and York (Pa.) College.
