St. Mary's Volleyball Wraps Up 2017 Campaign

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team concluded their 2017 season Saturday afternoon with a five-set loss to Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action. This was the Seahawks' third 3-2 setback in their last four matches.

St. Mary's 2, Frostburg State 3 (25-19, 24-26, 24-26, 25-22, 15-17)

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks opened up with a 25-19 win in the first set before Frostburg State answered with a pair of 26-24 victories to take a 2-1 lead.
  • St. Mary's rallied with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth to force a fifth set but the visitors outlasted the Seahawks, 17-15, for the match victory.
  • Outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished her junior campaign with four consecutive double-digit kill performances as Kelley tallied a team-best 24 kills. She came up two digs and four block assists shy of a triple-double as she picked up eight and a career-best six, respectively.
  • Junior outside hitter Grace Seifert (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury Christian) exploded today for a season-best 16 kills and added five digs while junior captain Mia Griffiths (La Plata, Md./La Plata) matched her career-high with 48 assists and contributed seven digs, four kills, and two service aces.
  • For the 25th time this season, junior captain Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) notched double-digit digs with 25 and registered four assists.

Other Top Performers for the Seahawks (3-22, 0-8 CAC)

  • Nicole Kreutzinger – 18 digs, 3 block assists, 2 kills)
  • Emily Benedict 15 digs, 2 service aces, 2 block assists
  • St. Mary's put up kills at a .217 clip while collecting 11.0 team blocks and nine service aces.

For Frostburg State (16-11, 4-5 CAC)

  • Naya Cheatem – 27 kills, 8 digs, 4 block assists
  • Madelyn Torres – 53 assists, 14 digs, 3 service aces, 2 kills
  • Lindsey Scepura – 34 digs, 4 assists
  • The Bobcats posted a .156 attack percentage for the match with eight service aces and 8.0 team blocks.
