No. 23 Christopher Newport Sweeps St. Mary's Volleyball

Newport News, Va. – Junior outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) starred for the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team at No. 23 Christopher Newport University Wednesday night. Kelley notched a match- and team-best nine kills as the Seahawks dropped a 3-0 decision to CNU for the second time this season.

How It Happened

  • Along with her nine kills, Kelley added seven digs while junior captain Hannah Krauss (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and first-year Kyla Hasemeier (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) contributed seven and six kills, respectively.
  • Junior captain Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) put up a team-best 13 digs and served up the team's only two aces of the match.
  • This time around, the Seahawks owned at least one lead in each set and forced 12 tied scores throughout the match.
  • St. Mary's was within 21-20 in the first set on a Captain attacking error but CNU held on for the 25-21 win.
  • The Seahawks started the second set with a 3-0 run and boasted a 4-1 lead before Christopher Newport broke open the game with a 16-4 run and gained a 2-0 advantage.
  • After kills from Krauss and Kelley gave St. Mary's a 9-7 lead in the final set, the Captains closed out the match on an 18-4 run.

  • Tylar McGill – 19 assists, 8 digs, 3 kills
  • Katie Piper – 7 kills, 7 digs, 3 block assists, 2 service aces
  • Josie Lucernoni – 15 digs, 2 assists
  • The Captains posted a .260 attack percentage and collected 9.0 team blocks and six aces in their eighth consecutive win.
