Seahawk Volleyball Battles No. 11 Juniata
Elizabethtown, Pa. – During the first day of action at the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College, the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team hung tough with the nation's 11th-ranked team, Juniata College, Friday night. Juniata came away with a 3-0 victory but the Seahawks made them earn it.
Juniors Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) and Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) paced the Seahawks (2-11) with eight kills each while Blanc tallied a team-best 11 digs. Sophomore setter Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) led the team with 20 assists.
Juniata (8-4), who has won the NCAA Division III national championship twice in the last six years, never led by more than five points in the first 33 points and the Eagles edged St. Mary's, 6-5, in the final 11 points for the 25-19 first set win.
The Seahawks played the next set much closer as the second game featured eight tied scores. Juniata broke with a 13-13 draw with a 12-7 spurt to earn a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead.
The third set was much of the same as the two teams were back-and-forth and the set had three lead changes. An Eagle error tied the set up at 20-all but Juniata responded with three straight points en route to a 25-22 triumph for the match win.
The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow in the final day of the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic. St. Mary's will face the host Blue Jays at 10:00 am before taking on Haverford College at noon.
