St. Marys Gets Past Elizabethtown in Four
St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior outside hitter Claire Kodan's (Olney, Md./Sherwood) 20-20 performance led the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon.
Kodan finished the match hitting .357 as she notched a match-best 20 kills to pace the Seahawk (11-7) offense. Defensively, Kodan picked up a match-high 20 digs and three block assists.
Elizabethtown (12-6) captured the first set to the tune of 25-18 before St. Mary's tallied wins in the next three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-23.
Senior middle blocker Jen Lamar (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) had a stellar performance for the home team as Lamar picked up a double-double on 11 kills and 10.0 total blocks (2 solos, 8 assists) and added one dig. Following Lamar's lead, the Seahawks recorded a season-high 13.5 blocks.
Contributing to the Seahawk defensive effort with double-digit digs were senior outside hitter Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and freshman libero Cecilia Blanc (Laytonsville, Md./Poolesville) as Gregorini had 15 and Blanc chipped in 11.
In her first career start, freshman setter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) dished out 39 assists and recorded 11 digs, three block assists, and two kills.
Senior outside hitter Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) was the only Blue Jay to land double-figure kills for the visitors as Tanner registered 14 along with 16 digs and two service aces. Defensively, Elizabethtown was paced by sophomore libero Andrea Weaver (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) who had 17 digs and one block assist.
The Seahawks will return to action next Wednesday, October 7 as St. Mary's travels to Fredericksburg, Va. to face the University of Mary Washington for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 7:00 pm.
Elizabethtown will take on Commonwealth Conference opponent, Messiah College, on October 6 at home at 7:00 pm.
