Obal Recognized by CAC with Weekly Honor

York, Pa. - Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Calvert Hall) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team nabbed her first Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week citation this season as announced by conference commissioner, Tom Byrnes, notching the award for the week ending October 25.

Obal earned the honor after leading the Seahawks to a 3-1 record last week, including a pair of CAC victories that lifted SMCM into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings and secured a berth in the 2009 playoffs.  In victories over Wesley College, Stevenson University and Neumann College, she had 77 assists, 23 digs, eight kills and five block assists, hitting for .412 in three matches.

The 5-7 junior setter notched 18 assists and two kills in a sweep of Wesley and followed that up with 35 assists, 18 digs, five kills and three block assists in a 3-2 victory over Stevenson.  Obal added 24 assists, four digs, and two block assists in just two sets played in a 3-0 shutout of Neumann.

In her first season as a setter, Obal ranks 40th in NCAA Division III and second in the conference with 9.55 assists per match.

The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow night as St. Mary's travels to Salisbury University to wrap up league action at 7:00 pm.
