St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team avenged one of their seven losses from last year as the Seahawks swept the visiting Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20), Tuesday night in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

Senior middle blocker Becca Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) picked up five kills in leading the Seahawks to a 25-15 win in the first set.  St. Mary's jumped out to a 9-2 advantage, forcing the Spartans to call a timeout.  York battled back to 13-10 before the Hawks ended the set on a 12-5 run.

In the second set, outside hitters Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) each tallied three kills as the Seahawks posted a 25-16 victory.  SMCM once again jumped out to a 9-2 advantage before a 7-0 run put the Spartans right back in the mix.  However, an 11-2 run by the Seahawks put the set out of reach.

Gregorini continued her strong play in helping the Seahawks to a 25-20 triumph in the final set of the match as she tallied five kills.  Junior outside hitter Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) contributed to the winning cause with four kills.

Both Tursell and Gregorini each finished the evening with nine kills, while Ewing added eight and Kodan chipped in seven.  Junior setter Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) dished out 17 assists, had four digs and served three aces, while senior libero Jackie Reid (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) notched 12 digs for the Seahawks.

St. Mary's looks to extend its five-match win streak this Saturday, September 13 at the Randolph-Macon College Tournament in Ashland, Va.  The Seahawks will take on Greensboro College at 9:30 am followed by the hosts at 1:30.  Their last match of the day will be against Trinity (D.C.) University at 3:30.
