St. Mary's City, Md. - Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md.) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team was selected by the Department of Athletics and Recreation as the first athlete-of-the-month of the 2008-09 year for the month of September.

This is Ewing's second career athlete-of-the-month selection as she was the September AOM in 2006.

Ewing is a 6-1, junior outside hitter who helped the Seahawks to their best start in program history with a 16-2 overall record (3-0 CAC) in August/September.  She registered five matches with double-digit kills, while recording five or more total blocks in four matches.

The Quince Orchard HS product led St. Mary's with 130 kills and a .372 attack percentage in 18 matches as Ewing averaged 2.17 kills per set.  She was second on the team with a .83 blocking average as Ewing tallied 10 block solos and 40 block assists.

She started the month by being named to the All-Tournament Team at the Haverford College Invitational on August 30-31 after Ewing finished the two-day tournament with 40 kills and a .378 attack percentage as well as 12 total blocks in leading the Seahawks to a 3-1 effort at the tournament.

Ewing notched a season-high 12 kills in a 3-1 loss at then-No. 18 Haverford as well as in a 3-1 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  She had 11 kills plus two block solos and five block assists in a 3-1 over Cabrini College.  Ewing also put up seven total blocks (2 BS, 5 BA) and seven kills in a 3-2 victory at Randolph-Macon College.

She matched her season-high in total blocks for the third time with one block solo and six block assists in a five-set win at Gettyburg.  Ewing also tallied a .450 attack percentage on nine kills and no errors in 20 attempts in that same victory.
