Seahawk Women's Tennis Continues Undefeated Spring Break Action

Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team (4-1) began action at the PTR Spring TennisFest Tuesday evening, notching a dominant 8-1 non-conference win over Marietta College.

How It Happened

Doubles:

  • Senior captain Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and first-year Sophia Gary (Germantown, Md./Holton-Arms) won their second straight doubles match with an 8-0 shutout of Marietta's Latrice Nelson and Victoria Xie at No. 1 doubles.
  • Seniors Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and Raziela Manangan (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) teamed up to defeat Katie Kitchen and Erin Warvell, 8-1, at No 2 doubles.
  • Sophomore Claire Bodine (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) and senior Savannah Bergen (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) started their Spring Break off with an 8-2 win over Destiny Grim and Reagan Haas.

Singles:

  • First-year Alden Grosh (Hagerstown, Md./ Smithsburg) came on for singles play and made the most of it by winning in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, over Warvell at No. 4 singles.
  • Barall and Gary continued their strong seasons as both won their singles matches by not dropping a single game.
  • Bodine kept her match interesting at No. 5 singles but eventually pulled out the win, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-0).
  • Senior Cristal Garcia-Lara (Annapolis, Md./Old Mill) made her first appearance of the season and came away with a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 6 singles.
