York, Pa. – In her first year on the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team, junior Savannah Bergen (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) earned her first career Capital Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week award, receiving the honor for the week ending March 5 as announced by Assistant Commissioner Tim Mowrer on Tuesday afternoon.
Bergen was honored as the CAC Player of the Week after posting a 4-0 record in a 1-1 week for St. Mary's (1-3).
She teamed up with first-year Claire Bodine (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) for a pair of victories at No. 3 doubles against No. 24 Harford Community College and No. 40 Washington College. In the matchup against Harford's tandem, Bergen and Bodine rallied from 3-6 down to post the 9-7 win. The Seahawk duo then tallied an 8-3 win at Washington College.
Bergen then notched two wins at No. 6 singles. She posted a straight set win over Harford's Rachel Hall, 6-1, 6-0 and followed that up with an 8-1 over Washington College's Mariah Thomas.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Friday, March 10 as the Seahawks return to conference action against Salisbury University (2-3, 0-1 CAC), who is ranked ninth in the Atlantic South region, at the Somerset Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m.
