St. Mary's Women's Tennis Falls Short in Opener

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team fell short to The Catholic University of America Saturday afternoon in their season opener with a final score of 8-1.

  • The Seahawks earned their lone point on the day when co-captains Marissa Romanek (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) and Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) defeated the Cardinals top duo of senior Laura Torsiello (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Bluepoint) and junior Sarah MacLean (Crownsville, Md./Mount de Sales) by the score of 8-6.
  • Junior Savannah Bergen (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and sophomore Natalie Edwards (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) were competitive at No. 3 doubles but dropped an 8-4 decision.


  • Catholic would sweep the Seahawks in the singles matchups.
  • Romanek had the best outing for St. Mary's as she took Torsiello to a third-set tiebreaker, falling 6-3, 3-6, 5-10 at No. 1 singles.
