St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team (7-6, 4-1 CAC) took on the Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania (6-3, 1-3 CAC) in Capital Athletic Conference action on Monday at the Somerset Tennis Complex. The Seahawks took to the courts looking to extend their win streak to three with the two victories coming against CAC opponents.
As the teams took to the courts, the Seahawks came out of the gates fast. In the doubles matches, the Seahawks clenched the first two points of the day with wins from seniors Liza Moore (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) and Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) at No. 2 doubles and seniors Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Anna Passaniti (Hereford, Md./Hereford) at No. 3 doubles.
The Spartans would not go down quietly, gaining their first point of the day at No. 1 doubles behind an 8-6 win by junior Darian Naill (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) and sophomore Katie Wagner (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly).
As the day moved to singles play, the Seahawks came out winning the first two points with victories in the No. 5 and No. 4 matches for a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Katie Chase (Parkton, Md./Hereford) defeated sophomore Elizabeth Wiley (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern), 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles while Rost defeated Naill, 6-0, 6-2.
York scored the next point, taking the No. 2 Singles match but the Seahawks captured the decisive point for the match victory at No. 6 singles. Moore defeated first-year Jessica Sherman (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central), 7-5, 6-0 and gave St. Mary's the decisive 5-2 advantage.
The Spartans finished out the day winning the final two matches of the day at No. 3 and No. 1 singles for the 5-4 final.
The Seahawks will play next against No. 18 University of Mary Washington on the courts of the Somerset Tennis Complex on Wednesday, April 6 at 6:00 p.m.
